Biographie

Hind Shoufani is a Palestinian/American/Jordanian writer/filmmaker. Born in Lebanon as a refugee in 1978, she has lived in Amman, Beirut, and Damascus. In 2002, she was awarded a Fulbright scholarship from Jordan to complete an MFA from NYU in film from the Tisch School for the Arts. She has directed several 16MM/video shorts, in fiction, documentary and experimental forms. For the past 20 years, she's been a reporter, writer, producer, director, translator and an editor, working in NYC, DC, Beirut, Amman and Dubai. She is currently a freelance director/producer in the Middle East and an active poet and founder of the spoken word group “Poeticians”. She has authored/edited several books, in literature, poetry and photography. In May 2015, she completed a personal feature length art house documentary, titled “Trip Along Exodus”, about the secular PLO Fateh factions and the leftist Palestinian revolution through an intimate family journey with her father, which has screened in more than 20 cities, won two awards and continues to travel. She's currently in post-production on “They Planted Strange Trees” her second feature length documentary and editing her third book of poetry as well.

The award-winning Film has been screened at DIFF Dubai, Beirut, Paris (won the Non-European documentary award at the European Independent film festival), Amsterdam, Brussels, Jerusalem, UK premiere was in the East End film festival in London, the Yamagata film festival in Japan and the Palestine film festival in Boston and the Carthage film festival in Tunis. Screenings in 2016 also included Houston, Washington, Cairo (won best film at the International Women’s film festival in Cairo), Tokyo, Geneva, Bristol, Amman, Sheffield and Istanbul. COMMERCIAL 1- Land Rover Rediscovery Film Producer/Director/Editor Produced and directed a film about vintage 8mm footage and photos of the Trucial states in the 1960’s. This never seen before footage we found in the UK is being used for a 4-Minute film I have directed for Land Rover featuring the photographer who lives in the UK and a host of local UAE people who comment on the rediscovery of memories. Am also editing and producing a 22-minute version of this film, as a documentary that is a historical document of the time, featuring several locations and people in the UAE who were here in the 1960’s. Shindagha Historic District of Dubai. 2-Consultant/Filmmaker Barker Langham Ongoing work with Barker Langham from the UK to conceptualize, write, and research all the film briefs for several waves of the Shindagha Dubai Historic District museum. Started in November 2017 and expected to continue till the end of 2018. 3-Capsule Arts Art consultancy in Dubai Producer/Director Produced and directed a five minute brand film for the team at Capsule Arts, which included shooting at Rove hotels, Nikki Beach hotel and the Kempinski hotel as well as other private locations. 4- Mastercard/Atlantis Digitas Lbi and Prodigious Director Directed two comedic videos for a special Mastercard/Atlantis offer on location at Atlantis. Each video is one minute long and included acting, improvisation work and a documentary feel. 5- Shindagha/ Dubai Historic District RAA/TGAC/APD Project management/Content Spent two months working with London-based companies RAA and TGAC on the new museums in production in the Dubai Historic District. Roles were partly project management and partly research for content development. 6- Shell Boomtown Productions BTS videographer/photographer Spent three days filming behind the scenes and photographing nature and crew on set in the desert in the UAE as part of a big production for Shell showcasing car stunts and dune bashing. 6- Comedy Central Arabic/ Dubai Segment Director “Comedy Ala Al Waqef” show Interviewed and directed shoots for 30 comedians performing in a new show on Comedy Central Arabia, in Stereo Arcade in Dubai. Responsible for social media, intro videos, behind the scenes, short interviews, and promos for five days on location. 7- National Geographic Abu Dhabi Director/Producer Nomad Productions, Dubai Produced and directed a half-hour film on the Union of the UAE and the history of how the UAE became a country, through retelling history from the perspective of older people who lived the changes in the country. We filmed in most of the Emirates. Film was commissioned by the RTA to be screened on National Day, 2016. 8- MAMEMO/ UAE Producer/ Director Produced and directed a 5 minute film on the history of the council for the 44th celebration of the Federal National Council in the UAE, as well as coordinating content, scenography and the rundown of the show which included dance, poetry and song. Emirates Palace, February 2016. 9- RED BULL/ Lebanon Producer/Director/Editor Produced, directed and edited an 8 minute film for Red Bull on Ras Beirut, vinyl and the fiftieth anniversary of a shop named “Chico” which is a cultural establishment in the area, and has been selling records, and films for fifty years now. 10- Strudel Films/UK/ Vimto, International Director Directed 3 films for Vimto in Dubai, Jordan, and NYC. They were the campaign to reunite people with their families for Ramadan. 11- Leo Burnett/Shufouna App/ Epic Films, Dubai Director Directed a 1.5 minute ad for the new art platform mobile application for Saudi. 12- Birdie Agency/Palringo/ Dubai Director Directed/produced six commercials for the mobile app Palringo. 13- Leo Burnett/ GMC Sierra/Epic Films, Dubai Director Directed four 20-second retargeting videos for the GMC Sierra. 14- LUX from Unilever/Epic films/Strudel films (UK) Director Directed shoots for Unilever for their new webisodes for LUX. Fashion contest happening in Saudi and Dubai. Residencies/Labs: 2010: My feature narrative film “This war on Love” was selected as a participant in the Interchange Script and Director Program from the Torino Film Lab in collaboration with Dubai Film Festival. 2011: I was awarded a 12-week writing residency at the Iowa University International Writers Program, starting in August till November 2011. During the residency, I performed at the City of Asylum Jazz poetry festival in Pittsburgh, as well as taught spoken word classes to students in New Orleans, Senior citizens in Iowa City, and performed numerous times for community centers, Iowa University, libraries, etc. Select Performances: 2017: Performed poetry at Sukoon readings in Mansion in Beirut.
