Biography

Sofia Aissaoui was born in Rabat, Morocco, and graduated from ESAV in Marrakech in 2012 as a Film Editor. Her graduation short documentary “How I Killed my Father” was well received and gave her the confidence to tell personal stories that took creative risks. She began her career in institutional films related to social conditions and the work of organizations like PNUD, which then inspired her to develop narrative stories about subjects striving to make change in their own ways. In 2015, Sofia made her TV screenwriting debut in comedy episodic content for "Hayat Saida." Sofia directed her first short film “Wind” in 2016, which depicted a lonely woman having to choose between the faithful memory of her late husband, or moving forward with a life she no longer feels useful in. The film took part in the Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner and aired on BBC Arabia and TV5 Monde. In 2016, Sofia and her partner Houda Lakhdar’s first feature film project "Belly of Hope" was selected for the first edition of Global Media Makers in Los Angeles. In 2017, the project was further developed in Barcelona thanks to a residency through Xabaca and the Jiwar Creation and Society. Sofia is currently developing her next series, “Casablanca Exposed.”
